Just down the road from us is a unique family attraction – the Marzipan Museum at Kfar Tavor.

Part of the new visitor center at the popular Tavor Winery it’s a fun activity for the whole family. There are amazing sculptures of celebrities and politicians as well as fairy tale characters.

It’s a family run business and you can watch the owners make the marzipan and praline chocolates.

After  a short film there’s a delightful workshop where you can make your own models from marzipan or chocolate – with help from expert instructors who adapt the workshop to every age from 3 to 93. Of course at the end, you can take your works home or eat them on the way. (ingredients supervised by the regional rabbi).

Today you can see the remains of the incredible Roman Baths and an ancient amphitheatre.

The popular modern hot springs and mineral baths fed by underwater springs are over 40 degrees celcius. There are no separate bathing facilities, however in the winter until Shabbat HaGadol, there is “men only” night on Thursday nights until 2am.

There is a lot to see and do even if you don’t use the Hot Springs or fresh water pool,

We watched the family-friendly parrot show, then took a stroll through the alligator park and petting zoo. There are lovely grounds for a picnic near the ancient Roman ruins.

On a clear day over Pesach we were able to see the entire Lake Kinneret, the Jordan Valley, Zemach, Kibbutz Kinneret, Yavne’el, Mount Tavor, Tiberias, Arbel, Meron, Tsfat, Migdal, and even the snow on top of Mount Hermon!

In the spring you’ll see wildflowers everywhere. There is a short hike of about 20 minutes through wild fruit trees down to an old man-made pool fed by a natural spring.

The Syrian soldiers made many of these pools for officers stationed on the Golan Heights before 1973 so they could cool off in the hot summers.

The site is run by Kibbutz Haruv and is free. There is a restaurant, gift shop and snack bar on the premises.

It’s a great stop after a morning or afternoon of nature trails, waterfalls, biking or jeeping.

The Golan Olive Oil Mill and Visitor Center offers a guided tour which explains the process of olive oil production. reviewing the evolution of the process from ancient tools to our modern machines. The tour includes a short film. Complete your visit with a gourmet tasting of different flavours of extra virgin olive oil.

During the olive-harvest season (which begins in October), visitors can watch as olive oil is produced. The entire process, from crushing to bottling, is open to the public.

We had a great time there… here’s a fun 2 minute video including us “tasting” the oil and “scrubbing” with olive soap.

This two-story single family home boasts a large master suite, family room (that doubles as a bedroom for the kids) eat-in kitchen with wood burning stove, and a lovely courtyard for your chickens and goats. Sorry folks, but there are no bathrooms and no running water. And it’s not for sale.

It’s at the Ancient Talmudic Village at Katzrin Park Living Museum.

This is a great, frum-friendly, family vacation attraction if you love archeology but have a hard time imagining what it would be like to live in a home in Israel 2000 years ago.

During “tourist season” there are guides to demonstrate and explain what life was like. We prefer coming here in the winter when the weather is cool and we have the place to ourselves.

They have a great film explaining what life was like for the sages  who lived here in the period of the Mishna.

The nature reserve is used as a public swimming venue as well as a wonderful place to picnic, play and explore with the whole family.

It’s a challenge for observant families who don’t partake in mixed swimming, so if you want to see this stunning park, I suggest you come when we did. Late in the day on a winter afternoon when it’s a bit too cool for swimming.

Sachne is right next door to the Gan Garoo Australian Zoo, so you can see both places on the same trip.

Since the center is open on Shabbat, it doesn’t have a major hechsher on the coffee shop, but they bring in baked goods and ice cream with good hechsherim.

Outside you can take a quiet stroll on the promenade along the lake with beautiful views of Tiberias and the Golan.

We had a great time this week walking among the kangaroos and parrots and feeding them! In addition you’ll see Koala bears, Emus, Cassawary, and lots of other animals and birds native to Australia.

It’s just outside Beit Shean adjacent to the Gan HaShlosha (Sachne) nature reserve.
